I have been asked many times how you can copy information from the Racing Post into a spreadsheet and this month I decided to make a video showing you two methods that you can use.

I have used Chrome for so long that I didn’t think that the web browser could be causing the problem. Very odd but at least we now know that if you want to copy and paste from the RP you need to use Google Chrome.
Found the date button, thanks for that Ark.

Doesn’t work with Firefox either. I will download chrome and see if that works.
When you click on data > from web in excel2007 you get a window displayed showing your home page by default. At the top of the window you have the address var a Go button and at the end of that row you will find the Options where you can disable date recognition

Many thanks to Richie for sending me a video of what was happening. I think I have found the problem. If you are still getting incorrect pasting into Excel, this seems to be some kind of Internet Explorer fault. This isn’t the place to get into why I dislike Internet Explorer but if you use Google Chrome as your browser then you should not get this error. I haven’t tested this with Firefox so the copy and paste may or may not work with that browser.

Of course, you can use the free software at http://camstudio.org/ to record your screen and then send the file to me through http://www.yousendit.com (because it will probably be quite large).

Thanks Richie, I can’t replicate this error. Without being able to see exactly what is happening it is hard to find a fix. Would there be any chance of you doing a quick recording and emailing it to me so I can see what is happening?

Okay this is very strange because I cannot replicate this problem, which version of Excel and Windows are you using? It may come to someone needing to offer me remote access to their computer so that I can try and see exactly what is happening.

Just popping out but will be around this evening. I have just tried the copy and paste and it is working fine for me. This sounds like a silly question but are you definitely only selecting the info on the racecard (not covering anything else)? I can’t replicate that error at my end so finding it hard to figure out what is happening.

Thats brilliant Ark thank you, where is it in the options as I seem to be overlooking it. Bill when you paste in are you making sure that you select Paste Special and then Paste As Text?

When did you make this video as I have not been able to cut and paste from the Racing Post for sometime and when I tried again today after seeing your video it still doesn’t work. Even though I select the at a glance card the copy process actually takes the complete data including the form, pedigree and owner information even though these options are unchecked.

Hi I am running Office 2003 and find that when pasting from Racing post the info is all over the place. Any idea how to get it to work with this version,it would be appreciated.
Thanks

When using the Sporting Life website with Excel you can get the weight to display correctly by disabling date recognition from the options tab on the new web query page
